GAMING IN KAMLOOPS

Derek Johnson celebrates 10 years of fun & games in Kamloops.

Derek Johnson has a very specific set of questions he asks when a customer walks into his board game shop in downtown Kamloops. Those questions zero in on how many people need to play, what age group it is suited for, how much time people want to spend playing and how much strategy is desired.

It’s important to have a method, when the shelves at All Aboard Games are lined with an upward of 300 games. “I have 100 per cent success,” Johnson said, noting he has yet to have someone return a game unsatisfied.

DID YOU KNOW?

The history of role-playing games begins with an earlier tradition of role-playing, which combined with the rulesets of fantasy wargames in the 1970s to give rise to the modern role-playing game. A role-playing game (RPG) is a type of game in which the participants assume the roles of characters and collaboratively create stories. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, they may improvise freely; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the games.

The 42-year-old father and business owner is celebrating the store’s 10th anniversary this year. It wasn’t long ago, he recalled, that he was injured while working a warehouse job in Vancouver, unable to go back to work or even take on a position as a grocery store cashier, being that problems with his back led to him not being able to stand.
It was then, when Johnson decided he needed to take charge of his own destiny and start his own business.

After studying entrepreneurship, Johnson purchased Casey’s Collectibles in Kamloops and transformed the shop into one that featured the games he enjoys playing, as an avid gamer with decades of experience.

And his timing couldn’t have been much better, as the market has seen a rapid growth in the interest of table-top gaming over the last several years.

“Ten years later, I own a building, I have a business that’s thriving and I have a community that supports me,” Johnson said.

In reality, Johnson has helped to create that community, linking players and people with social barriers to those with like-minded interests — all of whom have stepped foot in his shop. He’s seen friendships blossom over a game and said society would benefit from backing away from all of the every-day screens, from time to time.

“We provide a way to be social, without having the social skills,” Johnson said.

Johnson has even found games for his one and five-year old children to play with him and wife Erin. The youngest doesn’t necessarily understand the concept, but the eldest does.

“It’s almost an emotional connection when you’re getting a good game,” he said.

He welcomes gamers of all skill levels and knowledge into the shop, which is located downtown at 238 Lansdowne St. You can learn more about the store and its selection of games by visiting them at their website or on Facebook. They’re also on Twitter.
