BUILT IN KAMLOOPS
If you’ve been watching the growth in single- and multi-family land development going on in the Aberdeen area over the years, you’ve been witnessing the work of Aberdeen Highlands and Chris Bebek.
“We take a raw piece of land that is nothing,” explains Bebek, “and we put in all the roads, all the sanitary, sewer, water, retaining walls, all the lot grading, lighting, you know, so we service land so that it’s ready for somebody to build on.”
Aberdeen Highlands purchased the property in the West Highlands, including a struggling golf course, with the intent to develop it into something greater.
“We worked with the city into creating a development plan for the whole area,” Bebek says, a plan which includes a daycare, fire hall, neighbourhood amenity centre, district park, soccer fields and walking trail along with Single family and multi family sites.
“A community like this, it takes a lot of planning for services, figuring out sizing of piping systems, and where it’s all going to go, and challenges with drainage. So that’s sort of been our focus in the last two years on our next phase, working on the planning of the next larger area, and hope to be in the ground in the spring.”
And the sooner they can get into the ground, the better for Kamloops as a whole. Because Aberdeen Highlands’ developments have been responsible for injecting millions of dollars into the local economy.
“We’d rather keep our local people working versus somebody coming in from outside, and because we appreciate the people that live here and we know it’s harder for people in Kamloops to find good quality, long term jobs, especially in the business that we’re in, we want to deal local.”

Bebek calculated that their last phase, which included 52 lots and one 36 unit multi-family site, brings approx. $52 million to Kamloops local businesses. And keeping that money local is something that’s important to her.
“I was born and raised in Kamloops, so I’ve seen Kamloops come from a little tiny town to what it is today. I like to keep local because I like to keep the local economy working”
There’s still lots of work to be done, but Bebek hopes they can be selling their next phase by fall of 2019.
“The next phase is a little bit bigger of a job than the last phase, so we’ll have to see,” she explains. “A lot of it’ll depend on the city and getting all our approvals and everything in place. If they’re ready to go by the time spring arrives, then maybe.
“We’re shooting for that target but it’s still a little too early to say whether or not we will definitely have them on, but that’s our hope as there are lots of people depending on those jobs. And we’re doing everything we can to make that happen.
“Our motto is, where there’s a will, there’s a way.” And then she laughs. “At least that’s my motto, anyway.”
